About Feldenkrais

The Problem

More than 10 million people in the U.S. suffer from TMJ problems, and 80% of them are women. The symptoms range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain, and frequently persist for years.

The Feldenkrais Movement Institute has released these lessons that help those with TMJ break the cycle of pain and retrain their muscles to support a functionally healthy jaw.

Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorders (TMJDs) refer to a complex and poorly understood set of conditions that can cause pain in the area of the jaw joint and associated muscles and/or cause problems using the jaw. Both or just one of the TM joints may be affected. TMJDs can affect a person's ability to speak, eat, chew, swallow, make facial expressions, and even breathe.

TMJ problems can lead to chronic head, neck and shoulder pains. The cost of treatments can be prohibitive, especially if surgery is necessary.

The Solution

The TMJ Program uses a unique understanding of human neurology to reduce chronic tension in the jaw, face, neck, and upper back, and to reverse long-standing movement habits responsible for the original TMJ symptoms. The Intelligent Body TMJ Program contains 6 lessons, each about 10 minutes in length. These lessons are based on the Feldenkrais Method® and are gentle and easy to do.

TMJ symptoms can disappear within days of using these exercises. This program offers an ideal first step in the treatment of this condition. In most cases it will eliminate the need for further measures, and if additional medical intervention is needed, your new movement patterns will increase the chances of treatment success.
